El Gato Newspaper (EG) is a site-specific broadcast system with a transparent mode of production. It circles the concept of a mobile publishing office, but its explorations reach out from the basic duties of content generation, reproduction and circulation. Decisively stretching towards the vital potential of graphic design as a truly public venture, with an open structure that facilitates cross-pollination. Which is to say, the pulsating and cyclical transfer of thoughts from members of any given community, to the designer/mediator, and back.
Featured in the 26th International Biennial of Graphic Design Brno 2014
Through the activation of a temporal printed piece (the newspaper) and a mobile infrastructure (the news truck) EG creates a platform that re-thinks the relationship between information, its receiver, publisher and audiences. By adhering to low run numbers and select interest groups, it is able to control all aspects of publishing in the constrained 24 hr. time frame of the usual newsprint cycle. More than a daily paper it is a rolling conversation, trafficking information exchange between casually connected communities. In Los Angeles CA, during the month of January 2013 four individuals on board EG set out on the increasingly absurd daily task of writing, designing, producing and distributing this newspaper on site.
